Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Galicia and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985, on account of the beauty and extraordinary state of conservation of its magnificent historic centre, built around the cathedral, a world renowned masterpiece of Romanesque art. Compostela is also the final destination of a thousand-year-old pilgrimage, itself on the World Heritage List since 1993, which crosses Europe and has attracted people from all over the world for centuries.
